RARE EARTH — THE SERIES The Rare Earth Series is Billy Mays' account of his incredible Central and Eastern European adventures from 1983–2003 and the realities of living in Soviet-Bloc Eastern Europe. Follow his account as it really happened and learn how spies, black marketeers, and a surprising cast of famous elites and world leaders all play a part in Mays' journey during the closing days of the great East-West struggle. This is Volume I of an autobiographical tale about Billy Mays' journey from middle class America to an unusually eventful career in Central and Eastern Europe during the Cold War. Sometimes irreverent and shocking, this book sheds light into the dark and dangerous world that was the former Soviet Bloc before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Overwhelmed by the lack of employment opportunities following his graduation from the University of Washington with a degree in Economics, Billy Mays looks for career alternatives and, against the advice of most, sets out for Soviet-Bloc Eastern Europe. Arriving at a time when martial law Poland was just ending and the Cold War still raging between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, the author builds a personal network of contacts in Central and Eastern Europe that leads toward a direct involvement with U.S. intelligence operations and dealing in the black market. An amazing career, both legitimate and undercover, unfolds in this story that spans two decades and sees the Berlin Wall come down with enormous economic and political consequences for the region. An unexpected cast of characters in this collection of stories including President George H.W. Bush, the Kennedy Family, and President Lech Walesa, gives new meaning to what the West's battle strategy was during the Cold War and paints an alternative picture about how the East was really won. Billy Mays lives in Washington DC and continues his other work as an advocate for environmentally sound solutions for real estate and communities. He is working on the other three volumes in The Rare Earth Series and has several fiction books in the pipeline that take from the experiences of his twenty years in Central and Eastern Europe.

Nurses At Your Service: A Century of Caring developed by the Washington State History Museum in partnership with the Washington State Nursing Centennial Consortium comprises panels with wonderful graphics and historical narratives on nursing throughout the last century from pioneering times to present day. In addition to these panels, mannequins portray nurses (one wearing a beautiful cape loaned by Lourdes Health Network), a doctor, and patients (one on a decontamination gurney donated by Kadlec Regional Medical Center). Visitors may receive free doctors and nurses hats also donated by Lourdes. Inside the same location is a replica of a fall-out shelter that includes items received from Smithsonian Institute and also from the Bonneville Power Administration Midway Substation. Midway Representatives informed CREHST that back in the 1960's the small community at Midway had a fall-out shelter installed in the underground tunnel that runs below the substation and road area. This would have served during the cold war era as a sanctuary for residents and workers at Midway. The contents of the fall-out shelter included Civil Defense items such as survival biscuits and carbohydrate supplements. The shelter also had medical supplies and sanitation equipment including a Green Metal Drinking Water container, which doubled as the toilet facility (a plastic toilet seat is mounted on the can). There are two sanitation kits, with purification tablets, sanitizing tablets, and 10 rolls of Scots toilet paper with a note stating that they were for 50 people and to use them sparingly. These items are part of the Department of Energy's Hanford Collection which encompasses the Manhattan Project and Cold War ERA. To supplement the items from Midway, CREHST received a donation from the Smithsonian Institute of two large boxes of medical supplies, which would have been used for community fall-out shelters. Museum Hours: Monday-Saturday: 10 a.m. - 5 .pm., Sundays: 12 - 5 p.m. Admission: $4 Adults, $3 Students (7-17) & Seniors.

Music and song are wonderful tools to learn and teach history of countries and cultures. As a composer with an interest in Western history, Wayne Horvitz will talk about how he has used music to learn about and "feel" history as well as the role of social movements in the evolution of art and vice versa. Horvitz is the composer of Joe Hill: 16 Actions for Chamber Orchestra, Voices, and Soloist, a piece about Joe Hill, a member of the Industrial Workers of the World, a legendary radical labor organization that used music in support of its goals. With a personal family history of labor union involvement, and a passion for the American West, Horvitz crafts his historical music with a love and appreciation that his audience immediately understands. This presentation is part of the Community Lecture Series. All lectures are open to the public and admission is free of charge. All Lectures are subject to change, so call to confirm dates & times.
