Admission:FREE Speaker: Karin Rodland, Ph.D. Biomedical research is a major endeavor in the United States, with public and private funding in excess of $100 million annually. In just the past decade, this investment has resulted in a substantial decrease in the death rate from the four major killers: heart disease, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, and stroke. Improved understanding of disease processes has led to better drugs, better interventions, and earlier, more accurate diagnosis of these debilitating diseases. Advances in modern technologies related to genomics (genes) and proteomics (proteins) promise to usher in an age of personalized medicine, where therapies are tailored to the individual. Researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory are actively engaged in biomedical research, producing new technologies and new knowledge to promote better health. (Print a copy of the Flier) About Karin Rodland Karin Rodland is a Laboratory Fellow at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Dr. Rodland is currently Science Lead for NIH programs and Deputy Director of the BioMolecular Systems Initiative at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Dr. Rodland was an associate professor in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at Oregon Health Sciences University from 1985-2001 and is still a member of the Oregon Cancer Center. Dr. Rodland's research focuses on understanding the signaling pathways that control critical cellular decisions involved in the process of malignant transformation. She is involved in applying proteomics capabilities developed at PNNL to identify biomarkers for early detection of breast and other cancers, and in new biomarker assays. Dr. Rodland received her Ph.D. from Syracuse University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship with a NCI Public Health Research Service Award also at Syracuse University. About the Community Science & Technology Seminar Series The Community Science & Technology Seminar Series was launched by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to help the general public better understand and explore how science transforms our world. 3IN4 NEED MORE AND ELDER CARE EXPERT DR. MARION CELEBRATE AGING AND SHARE PRACTICAL ADVICE TO PREPARE FOR LONG-TERM HEALTH NEEDS Kennewick, WA - MAY 16, 2012 - The Tri-Cities leg of a nationwide long-term care awareness tour is coming to Kennewick on May 16th. Non-profit group 3in4 Association and its spokesperson, elder care expert & author Dr. Marion, are touring the country as part of the national 3in4 Need More campaign, an educational initiative to raise awareness about the need for Americans to better prepare for their long-term health care needs. According to the US Department of Health & Human Services, nearly 70% of Americans over 65 will need some form of long-term care. Yet most are unprepared for its financial and emotional impact. Dr. Marion is driving across the US in the 3in4 Need More bus to give Americans a wake-up call to the realities of long-term care, and how they can better prepare for it. Her message is simple - she's sending out an SOS: S = SITUATION. It's a fact: we're getting older and living longer than ever before. If you don't need long-term care, your parent, spouse, or other loved one might. O = OPTIONS. Long-term care can take on many forms, all of which can cost into the thousands. Consider your options now so you won't be shocked later. Check the calculator at 3in4NeedMore.com to find long-term care costs in every state. S = SOLUTIONS. Traditional insurance and Medicare will not cover most long-term care costs. Research alternatives - like financial planning, government support, family support, long-term care insurance, reverse mortgages, and more. Dr. Marion will be in Kennewick on May 16th to share her tips and advice. Her talk starts at 2pm at The Clover Island Inn, at 435 Clover Island Drive in Kennewick. To reserve a spot, or to interview Dr. Marion and/or 3in4 Association President Jonas Roeser, please contact Kristy Skowronski at kristy@resoundmarketing.com or 609-279-0050, x103.

Judith will help build skills to use memories, experiences, and sense of place as a basis for writing poems. To enlighten and inspire participants to the expressive nature of poetry, she will also offer examples of her own work and that of local poets.

Augusten Burroughs, Nonfiction Wednesday, May 23 7 PM, Gjerde Center Burroughs is this author of several books including the bestselling memoir, Running With Scissors. His most recent book is This is How: Proven Aid in Overcoming Shyness, Molestation, Fatness, Spinsterhood, Grief, Disease, Lushery, Decrepitude & More. For Young and Old Alike. To say that Augusten Burroughs has lived an unusual life is an understatement. From having no formal education past third grade and being raised by his mother’s psychiatrist in the seventies to enjoying one of the most successful advertising careers of the eighties to experiencing a spectacular downfall and rehab stint in the nineties to having a number one bestselling writing career in the new millennium, Burroughs has faced humiliation, transformation and everything in between. That he is able to wring humor and insight out of this shocking scenario is testimony to Burroughs's writing skill. Upon its publication in 2002, Scissors was hailed as "mordantly funny" (Los Angeles Times), "hilarious" (San Francisco Chronicle), and "sociologically suggestive and psychologically astute" (The New York Times). The book became a #1 bestseller and was turned into a 2006 movie starring Annette Bening, Alec Baldwin, and Joseph Fienes.

"With an energy and style that reminded me of Gogol Bordello, this Bellingham, Washington band fuses funk, soul, reggae, dancehall, some jazz and blues and a touch of roots rock in a universal swirl of sound. If you had a pulse then your feet were moving, your butt was shaking and your hands were flailing in ecclesiastic spirals along with the mad uproar surrounding you. Their page contains an apt one-liner, reading: “Let’s get ridiculous.” As the horns bellowed, the drummer let loose manic howls, and the bassist laid down one funky line after another, I realized that this saying was spot on, and that I was watching one of the best live acts in the Pacific Northwest." -Sam Sanborn, Oregon Music News

"Michael Powers has established himself among a new breed of guitarists and composers who, with each album and every performance, continually redefines the guitars' role in the jazz context. His technique is stunning, but he never employs it at the expense of the musicality of the melodic line. Blues has always been at the core of Michael's inspiration and expression." Exhibit at White Bluffs The original recyclers Years ago, feed sacks, sugar sacks, salt bags and flour sacks were always recycled. Made from brightly printed muslin, these bags became bloomers, dresses, aprons and quilts. Creative marketing departments printed patterns on the bags. These patterns enabled the lady of the house to easily stitch simple household aprons, and children’s dresses. The bags were a great source of fabric, during “hard times” and more than one farmer was sent to market with instructions to, “make sure both bags match”. The White Bluffs Quilt Museum located at 294 Torbett in Richland has an excellent assortment of these bags in their collection and a number of them are currently on display. Quilt tops, made in the early 30's from these feed sacks, are also on exhibit through June.
