River Recreation in the Tri‑Cities Through Every Season
The best river days don’t always involve a swimsuit. In Tri-Cities, Washington, a fall walk along the Columbia River can be just as rewarding as a summer paddle. Across Kennewick, Pasco and Richland, the Columbia, Snake and Yakima rivers give you reasons to get outside in every season.
Need inspiration? Three Bechtel employees share what keeps them coming back, from family fishing trips to adventures in the saddle.
Cast a Line, Make a Memory
For Steve Germain, Bechtel’s Deputy Engineering Group Supervisor, a fishing trip offers more than the possibility of a catch.
“Fishing is a relaxing way to unplug, enjoy the outdoors and reduce stress. Being on the water, surrounded by nature and away from the distractions of everyday life, is therapeutic and gives me a chance to recharge.”
“I also enjoy learning how to catch fish in different locations and the different species of fish. Every time I fish, it’s another opportunity to learn, practice, and improve. More importantly, my grandfather taught me how to fish, and I wanted to create those same memories with my family.”
Make it your own: Plan a fishing outing around your visit, checking current Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife seasons and emergency rules for your location and species. A local guide can help you get started.
Paddle and Unplug
When warmer weather returns, take inspiration from Mindy Eakin, Bechtel’s Senior Administrative Specialist Supervisor.
“There’s something special about being out on the water on a paddleboard. I love the views, the sunshine, mountains, rivers, and the feeling of being completely surrounded by nature. The wildlife is spectacular, too. Birds, beavers, turtles, deer, and so much more make every outing a little different.”
“Paddleboarding is also a great workout, especially when you’re paddling against the current. But it never really feels like exercise. Being on the water brings a sense of peace and makes everything else fade away. No emails, deadlines, or noise – just time to enjoy the moment.”
Make it your own: Explore paddleboarding or kayaking on a spring or summer visit. Check rental availability and conditions, wear a life jacket and dress for the water temperature. A local outfitter can help you choose an outing suited to your experience.
Plan your next river day in the Tri-Cities
Start with a riverside walk this fall, then come back for a new adventure when the seasons change. As Steve, Mindy and Heather remind us, some of the best reasons to head for the river are the people you bring along.
